Pawan Kumar Chamling is a prominent Indian politician, writer, poet and the founder-president of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF). He served as the 5th Chief Minister of Sikkim from 12 December 1994 to 26 May 2019, making him one of the longest-serving Chief Ministers in Indian political history.

He was born into a farming family and was the eldest among six children. His early experiences of poverty and the lack of basic facilities in rural Sikkim influenced his later political outlook. He developed an interest in poetry and literature at a young age.
Beginning of Political Career
Chamling became involved in Sikkim's democratic movement during the 1970s. At the age of 23, he participated in the movement associated with L. D. Kazi, which advocated electoral reforms and the principle of "one man, one vote." The movement was an important part of the political transition that eventually led to Sikkim becoming India's 22nd state in 1975.
In 1982, he was elected unopposed as President of the Yangang Gram Panchayat. He entered the Sikkim Legislative Assembly in 1985, representing Damthang. In 1989, he was re-elected and subsequently became Minister for Industries, Information and Public Relations in the government of Nar Bahadur Bhandari.
Formation of Sikkim Democratic Front
After differences with the ruling establishment, Chamling was removed from the council of ministers in 1992. On 4 March 1993, he founded the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) and became its president. His political movement emphasized democracy, social justice and greater participation of ordinary people in governance.
Chief Minister of Sikkim
❀ The SDF won the 1994 Sikkim Assembly election, securing 19 of 32 seats. On 12 December 1994, Pawan Chamling became the fifth Chief Minister of Sikkim.
❀ Under his leadership, the SDF won successive Assembly elections in 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014. In the 2009 election, the party won all 32 Assembly seats.

He later founded the literary magazine Nirman and established Nirman Prakashan, which published numerous books.

2019 and 2024 Elections
In 2019, the SDF lost power to the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, ending Chamling's 25-year tenure as Chief Minister. He continued as an opposition politician and remained president of the SDF.
In the 2024 Sikkim Assembly election, Chamling contested from Poklok-Kamrang and Namchi-Singhithang, but lost both contests.
